Mandela Day is an important day in South African communities, it is a day for us not only to remember a great man but to do something in his legacy. It is a day to take a step back and to do something to better the lives of those around us. This Mandela Day, McCain Foods South Africa and Metro FM have partnered together to make a small difference to the lives of the women and children living at the Frieda Hartly Shelter in Yeoville.
The Frida Hartley Shelter is a safe-haven for abused and vulnerable women and children, many being mothers with their children. The shelter aims at helping these women get back on their feet and help to build their confidence so that they build themselves up again. This is done through a number of ways, including providing counseling and therapy for both the women and children. The focus is also on giving the women work skills to help them find a job through different training and skills development courses. The women also make different items such as bangles and necklaces which are sold at markets to provide them with an extra income.

On Mandela Day, the McCain South Africa team will be revamping the creche at the shelter. McCain will also be donating a number of items such as, a deep freeze, sewing machine, educational books and toys, beads, sewing machine as well as McCain products to name but a few. The women will be given a sewing class where they will be taught how to refine their skills and create new and exciting elements to sell at the markets. The children will be entertained with a jumping castle, clowns and magicians. Moms and kids will then also enjoy a deliciously tasty McCain lunch. Metro FM have also come on board to share their support and will be broadcasting from the shelter during The Bridge from 10 am till 12 noon with Dineo Ranaka and Lerato Kganyago and The Great Escape from 12 noon till 3 pm with Amon Mokoena and Pearl Modiadie.
